Principal's Message

In the summer of 2010, I became the Founding Principal of Valley Charter Elementary School and was challenged with the extraordinary undertaking of opening an elementary school that did not yet exist. In ten weeks we planned curriculum, hired teachers, built classrooms, enrolled students and readied ourselves to open our doors.

Over 100 excited families stood before me on September 7, 2010, having taken the leap of faith that this new school created from nothing but hard work, determination, and desire would offer an excellent education for their children. And that’s what we did! What happened over the next 10 months was nothing short of remarkable. In our inaugural year, teachers exposed children to a dynamic and engaging curriculum, friendships were built, and parents devoted their time and dollars to supporting the growth and philosophy of the school. I am privileged to have been part of the launch and evolution of this vibrant learning community.

At Valley Charter Elementary School, we instill a love of learning in our students. Children see themselves as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists and thinkers. Students engage in hands-on, collaborative activities, which involve problem solving and critical thinking. We offer a constructivist learning environment that nurtures, challenges, and values every member of the community. Our community celebrates the whole child. We value a child’s social-emotional development as much as his or her academic development. This is an atmosphere where children are taught to communicate their ideas and feelings, and where debate and discussion are respected. Students are guided and supported as they develop into effective communicators, lifelong learners, and problem solvers who are not afraid of taking risks or making mistakes.

At Valley Charter Elementary School, we are a community that cares for each other, from helping a school family in need with home-cooked meals to supporting families outside of our community by sponsoring a food drive or collecting money for the Red Cross. Our goal is that VCES students will enter this global community with a sense of compassion and conservation as well as with the critical and creative thinking skills to properly care for this ever-changing world. And, most importantly, that they will use their talents to be invaluable resources that will ensure a better future for our planet and ourselves.

I am excited to lead our community in the growth and development of Valley Charter Elementary School. I know that we offer an outstanding public education to our students and it is my pleasure to be a part of their journey as they learn about themselves, others, and the world.

Warmly,
Leslie Lainer
Founding Principal
